Digitale I/O-modules ontvangen de binaire regelsignalen van en naar het procesniveau.
Analoge signaalmodules ontvangen de analoge regelsignalen (bijv. meetgegevens) van en uit het procesniveau. Afhankelijk van de toepassing en het type worden de regelsignalen ontvangen van het procesniveau en omgezet in interpreteerbare regelsignalen. Analoge uitvoermodules zetten de interne regelsignalen om tot signalen die geschikt zijn voor het procesniveau.
