De absolute encoder is ontworpen om de absolute positie-informatie uit te geven. Hij heeft een uniek codepatroon, waardoor dit soort encoder een unieke digitale code voor elke hoekpositie van de as weergeeft. Een belangrijke eigenschap bij absolute encoders is dat het altijd mogelijk is om de exacte positie van de as uit te lezen, ook na het uitvallen van de voedingsspanning.
Absolute encoders zijn verkrijgbaar met klassieke parallelle of seriële (SSI, BISS enz.) uitgangscircuits, maar zijn eveneens verkrijgbaar met de actuele Profibus, Profinet, DeviceNetT, EtherCAT, CANopen, Modbus of Powerlink interfaces. Absolute encoders kunnen singleturn of multiturn zijn.
Afhankelijk van de vereisten van de klant kunnen absolute encoders geleverd worden met uitgaande as of holle as, in standaard- of aangepaste uitvoeringen.
