Les codeurs les plus simples et les plus couramment utilisés sont les codeurs rotatifs incrémentaux qui fournissent des impulsions en fonction de la rotation de l'axe. Une impulsion ou incrément est un signal digital carré. La résolution du codeur correspond à son nombre d’incrément par tour, elle est gravée sur un disque optique comportant une succession de parties opaques et transparentes. Une lumière émise par des Diodes Electro Luminescentes (DEL), traversent les fentes de ce disque, créant sur les diodes réceptrices un signal de type incrémental. Pour un codeur ayant une résolution de 360 points, 360 périodes d'onde carrée sont produites en une rotation complète de l'axe. En comptant le nombre de périodes, la position de l'axe peut être définie par rapport à sa position de départ.
Les codeurs incrémentaux sont idéals pour des applications pour lesquelles un asservissement de vitesse ou de position est recherché.
